Past Present Future - triptych, oil on canvas, 30x40cm each, 2024

Gosia Łapsa-Malawska’s triptych “Past, Present, Future” comprises three intimate oil paintings that delve into the philosophical concepts of time and perception. Each piece portrays a horizon line that is deliberately blurred and set against a backdrop of uneven, solid ground, symbolising the foundation of our existence and the inherent strength derived from our origins. These paintings delve into the philosophical depth of the "horizon" as more than just a visual boundary where earth meets sky. In this context, the horizon represents a metaphorical threshold that encompasses both the visible and the unseen - the known and the unknown, the conscious and the unconscious, as well as the temporal dimensions of past, present, and future.

The artworks seamlessly blend these elements, using varying shades of grey- specifically, Payne's grey, a hue favoured by Malawska. This choice of colour enhances the thematic exploration of ambiguity and transition, inviting viewers to ponder where their own horizons lie. The paintings pose introspective questions: How do we perceive our limitations? What do we make of the possibilities life presents? Is it possible to envision a bright future amid the grey shades of uncertainty?

Through "Past, Present, Future," Łapsa-Malawska encourages a reflective journey, urging us to consider our place within the temporal continuum and to confront the boundaries of our perception. The series is an invitation to visualize our future with optimism, despite the complexities and ambiguities that life brings.
