BEFORE CHILDHOOD ENDED.

(POLAND, SUMMER 1939, MY GRANDMA ANIA, AUNTIE JOLA AND EWA)

The image depicts one hot summer in the South of Poland (perhaps in Kraków or Muszyna) with three cousins; joyful girls who used to spend time together sharing secrets, stories and fun. That summer was the last carefree time of their childhood, before 1st September 1939 when the World War II changed their lives forever.

'Before Childhood Ended' is homage to my Grandma and to all who had to grow up immediately that summer.

Midsummer Night, Kupała Night, Sobótka, St John's Night and many more different names for that one special night.

According to Slavic mythology, the fern flower is magic. Unique and hard to find, the flower blooms only for a fragment of the night on the eve of the Summer solstice. It is believed that the finder of the fern flower will become wealthy and happy.

On the Midsummer Night / Kupała night, everything is possible.

Work 'SEEKING THE FERN FLOWER' is part of a ‘Midsummer Night' series, inspired by unified traditions found among the diversity of European cultures.
